Stay well away from New York City
as dictator descends into madness

NYC Expands Vaccine Mandate to Whole Private Sector, Ups Dose Proof to 2 and Adds Kids 5-11
https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/coronavirus/nyc-mulls-tougher-vaccine-mandate-amid-covid-19-surge/3434858/

Mayor Bill De Blasio's extremist background shows in his handling of the non-crisis. Detection of a few omicron cases does not justify such sweeping orders. It's not even known whether the vaccines available work against omicron. But it is known that all vaccines have dropped drastically in effectiveness -- probably because they don't work against newer variants, What is the point of compelling people to be inoculated with vaccines that are no longer very effective?

More vaccine might increase effectiveness -- for the same variant or if variants are similar enough. Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., a presidential adviser, specifically said that he had no proof that more vaccine injections would help. In any case, there is almost no data available on the omicron variant. A few cases do not translate to statistical linkage between surging hospitalizations and deaths.

"Scientists have been working to understand how well boosters may protect against [covid] variants," says a National Institutes of Health statement on boosters. "They’re also investigating whether boosters need to be modified to match new mutations in the virus."

Scientists hope boosters will work against variants
https://www.nih.gov/news-events/nih-research-matters/moderna-covid-19-booster-may-protect-against-variants

So health experts don't know whether boosters can be devloped fast enough to work against variants.

Studies on monkeys of experimental Moderna boosters indicate that they do well at re-prompting the immune system to create covid-fighting antibodies, which had faded because the human body's "memory" of the covid threat may wear off rather quickly. The studies were carried out by Fauci's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

The study synopsis mentioned that the boosters also stimulate T and B cells, which are crucial to the immune system's defense structure. Such stimulation is routine for vaccines, and for infections generally, and does not imply that, on average, the immune system has been robustly strengthened.

“Our results suggest that covid-19 booster vaccines may significantly increase immunity against the virus,” said Robert Seder, a study co-author (the phrase "the virus" can be misleading as each variant and mutation has a distinct structure, which presents different threats). “Boosters may prevent severe illness or death, particularly among older adults and those with pre-existing health conditions. They could also potentially limit mild infection and transmission.”

This finding is consistent with the practice of giving seniors high doses of flu vaccine. The idea is to stimulate the weakened immune system to produce antibodies sufficient to form "immune memory."

To recap, it is outrageous that free people are being forced to take into their bodies substances whose value is substantiated, if at all, by very limited data.

It is also outrageous that children and adults under 65 are forced to be vaccinated against something that, in general, presents NO THREAT or VERY LOW THREAT to them. And, this is the very group that, if left alone, will catch harmless infections and set up a herd immunity barrier that will tend to protect immune-weak people. The aged and the sickly already know to take defensive measures, as they should do for flu and other diseases that can also set off cytokine storms in their lungs.

Further, what is the point of such orders now that the United States has reached herd immunity? Does De Blasio have evidence that New York City is an exception to the general situation in which the rate of infection is on a down curve?

How is it that he still is unaware that the least controlling states have had the best covid rates.

This man does not want to know. That's because he has a hidden agenda. He's part of a leftist pushback against the trend to decontrol Americans and return their traditional liberties.

What we're seeing here is a determination by some covert group -- the Communist China lobby -- to push through global controls on democracies in order to gain some new world order or other.

CAUTION: An obvious next move is establishment of covid concentration camps, where those who lack updated vax passports are forcibly quarantined. Wouldn't that be a sight. Holiday revelers lacking vax proof rounded up and shoved in a quarantine center? That possibility is not far out at all. Australia, which once was known for its vigorous defense of liberty, now has such an internment camp, which it rationalizes with science-free talking points.

Springsteen's hit man song

When I hear the Band's version of Bruce Springsteen's song "Atlantic City," I get two reactions. The Band's version is musical poetry. The lyrics give me the creeps. Why? As a former Jersey boy who grew up in Springsteen's era, I really identifed with the mood of the song -- at first! Then I started

decoding it as a subdued lament for a contract murder.

Verse 1: The Chicken Man was a Philadelphia mob boss slain in 1981 by a nail bomb as part of a war of succession. Philadelphia gangland had a share in Atlantic City spoils, as did New Jersey gangland and New York City's crime families.

The reason trouble was brewing on the boardwalk was that rival mob factions -- now that the capo was dead -- were expected to fight over various skimming and kickback schemes.

Verse 2: Coping with gangland trouble at this level would have been very difficult for "the D.A.," that is, top law enforcers -- especially because the police were riddled with the mob's friends. Similarly, the gambling commissioner would have had little power to do much (assuming he hadn't been bought by the mob).

The chorus sounds like someone who  has murdered someone, or is about to, expressing disquiet over the dirty deed. In a kind of self-pardon, the idea is: "Well, maybe it's not that bad. Maybe that person's life will be restored one of these days." The remainder of the chorus suggests someone who wants to forget what he's just done or is about to do by going out with his girl and having a little fun.

Verse 3 probably would be more on point if it read, "But I got the kind of debts no 'poor man' can pay." (The "honest man" reference may reflect the common notion that people don't get rich honestly.)  Anyway, the poet and his girlfriend are in Atlantic City just before gangland violence is to break out.

The bridge just gives a bit of mood. But what is the mood? A loveless, cold relationship.

Verse 4: In contrast to crooked mobsters, he's frustrated at being broke. So, what's the solution? If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. His money worries are over, at least for now. "But I talked to a man last night, gonna do a little favor for him." The "little favor" almost surely implies a big payoff for a crime of some sort. Given the previous lyrics, the crime sounds like a murder-for-hire job. Also, this is the last line of the song, not counting the chorus, making it more meaningful.

Well, of course, if Springsteen wrote a song about a contract murder, that doesn't mean the murder really happened or that Springsteen was a hit man. He was quite the poet. He wrote all kinds of songs.

In fact, elements of the song are in error (or fictional).

✓ The house of the Chicken Man -- Philip Testa -- was not blown up, though the nail bomb was powerful enough to blast through the front porch floorboards.

✓ There is no office of "district attorney (DA)" in New Jersey. The office with equivalent powers would have been the Atlantic County prosecutor.

✓ There was no "gambling commissioner," per se. At the time of Testa's murder, the Casino Control Commission was composed of five commissioners, four of whom were part-time with no expertise in law enforcement. The panel's full-time chairman was Joseph P. Lordi, a former Essex County prosecutor. So, loosely, it would be fair to call him "the" gambling commissioner.

✓ It seems doubtful that there was a Coast City Bus line, as most bus routes were taken over by NJ Transit in 1980. But it's possible people traveling from Philadelphia to Atlantic City used that "Coast City" appellation casually.

We don't wish to nitpick. But the evidence is very iffy that Springsteen had a first-hand knowledge of circumstances surrounding a contract killing. He could easily have inferred, or heard about, such a killing shortly after a mob capo's murder.

[Verse 1]
Well, they blew up the Chicken Man in Philly last night
And they blew up his house too
Down on the boardwalk they're ready for a fight
Gonna see what them racket boys can do

[Verse 2] Now there's trouble busin' in from outta state
And the D.A. can't get no relief
Gonna be a rumble on the promenade
And the gamblin' commissioner's hangin' on by the skin of his teeth

[Chorus]
Everything dies, baby, that's a fact
But maybe everything that dies some day comes back
Put your makeup on, fix your hair up pretty
And meet me tonight in Atlantic City

[Verse 3]
Well, I got a job and I put my money away
But I got the kind of debts that no honest man can pay
So I drew out what I had from the Central Trust
And I bought us two tickets on that Coast City bus

[Chorus]
Everything dies, baby, that's a fact
But maybe everything that dies some day comes back
Put your makeup on, fix your hair up pretty
And meet me tonight in Atlantic City

[Bridge]
Now our luck may have died and our love may be cold
But with you forever I'll stay
We'll be goin' out where the sand turns to gold
But put your stockings on, 'cause it might get cold

[Chorus]
Oh, everything dies, baby, that's a fact
But maybe everything that dies some day comes back
Put your makeup on, fix your hair up pretty
And meet me tonight in Atlantic City

[Verse 4]
Now I've been a-lookin' for a job, but it's hard to find
There's winners and there's losers and I'm south of the line
Well, I'm tired of gettin' caught out on the losin' end
But I talked to a man last night, gonna do a little favor for him

[Chorus]
Well, everything dies, baby, that's a fact
But maybe everything that dies some day comes back
Put your makeup on, fix your hair up pretty
And meet me tonight in Atlantic City

[Wrapup]
Oh, meet me tonight in Atlantic City
Oh, meet me tonight in Atlantic City

The Pill desexualizes women -- documentary

The opinions expressed are not necessarily those of NEWS of the WORLD

Why do girls hate computer science?

Fact: 2.8% of chess grandmasters are women.
Fact: 11.1% of U.S. electrical engineers are women.
Fact: 20% of computer science specialists are women.
Fact: 20% of U.S. physicists are women. Despite increases in the number of women earning degrees in physics, the proportion of women in this field, averaging about 20% across all degree levels, is the lowest of all the physical sciences.
Fact: Less than 30% of PhD mathematicians in the U.S. are women.

Is the problem -- if it is a problem -- Nature or Nurture? If Nurture, then it must be that women feel uncomfortable in fields where males may patronize them. But, in that case, doesn't that point to Nature? That is, studies show women to be substantially more risk-averse than men. So, on average, they fear the consequences of competing with men in a "man's game." Men are risk-averse also, but not so much as women. Perhaps that has something to do with testosterone.

Another point: women seem to learn better in small groups. Cooperation is key. Men also cooperate, but the more advanced are prone to spending long hours in solitary study. Does this make a difference in depth of comprehension? The ratio of solitary to cooperative study is certainly very likely to be significant in advanced mathematics.

Clearly, we are not talking about the seemingly many exceptions that prove the rule.

The probability that Nature is the driver in women's career preferences is shown by the fact that women earn a slight majority of doctoral degrees in general. But in the "hard sciences," they trail by large percentages. Interestingly, in biological and agricultural sciences -- which are seen as a blend of "hard" and "soft" sciences -- the figures are about 51% for women vs. 49% for men. That's roughly even when you consider that the ratio of males to females in the U.S. population is 49:50.

Yet in the early years of computer science, women were well represented, especially among programers. Though programing [1] was highly detailed in that period, it had not reached the levels of complexity that are standard now. For some reason (Nature?), boys seem able to deal with computational "problem-solving" complexity better than girls. But, even if that is not so, girls are avoiding this field because they don't wish to cope with male dominance. But why have males gained dominance? As said, the answer appears to be Nature.
The American Enterprise Institute credits the Council of Graduate Schools
for the data shown.

1. What do programers do? They program. So get with the program and use the slimmer, more sensible spelling. That goes for programing too.

Back in the seventies, a bunch of illiterate computer enthusiasts adopted the double-m spelling. And vroom! they won. But the American spelling of the base noun is program, not programme as in Britain.

In this country we tend to drop the double consonant in derived forms. To wit, cancelled was once quite common. But these days canceled is far more common.

Other words that rate a slimmer version: cigaret and employe, though you have to learn to read that one with a long e ending.

U.S. attains covid herd immunity.
No sign Omicron will change that

Press accounts, citing various scientific studies, show that the United States has reached "herd immunity" against covid.

But health bureaucrats and media seem to be hoping that the data-free Omicron variant can be used to stir up covid hysteria once more.

Herd immunity does not mean zero spread of a disease like covid, explained Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, a Stanford University expert in health care policy. Herd immunity means that an infected person infects on average one or fewer other persons. Some viruses, such as ebola, would require stern measures. But others, such as flu viruses and the coronaviruses, which yield colds, flu and covid, are better handled through milder tactics, he argued.

Covid cases falling, but seasonal rise is expected
https://www.usnews.com/news/health-news/articles/2021-10-25/covid-cases-falling-but-trouble-signs-arise-as-winter-looms

Though U.S. News sees "trouble" from winter covid, such a rise is consistent with the definition of herd immunity. Other coronaviruses, which trigger colds, and flu viruses also follow a cyclic seasonal pattern.

At the herd immunity rate of infection, coronaviruses tend to be a manageable problem, with "focused protection" being the best option, according to the Great Barrington Declaration. Fauci scorned this document, saying it was irresponsible to let the covid virus "rip" through the population. A recent study published in Nature showed that the covid virus had early on "ripped" through the U.S. populace, with most people not even noticing.

That study shows that the case rate versus the infection rate is below 1% -- that very few infections result in illness requiring treatment.

The National Institutes of Health claimed recently that this discovery showed how important the vaccination programs have been. Yet, the agency did not focus on the fact that one-third of the population had been naturally vaccinated within a few months. Had lockdowns and other interventions not occurred, most of the rest of the populace would have been harmlessly naturally vaccinated.

The Nature article seems to dovetail with the following:

Covid cases fall in 5 least vaxxed states
https://www.newsweek.com/covid-cases-are-falling-five-least-vaccinated-states-1655358

That makes sense. The rapid dissemination of covid through the healthy population has produced natural immunity. That is, herd immunity has been achieved in those states. For the country as a whole, the drop in covid means herd immunity -- though it appears that mass inoculations may have been counterproductive, which tends to support Bhattacharya's insistence that only the immune-weak should have been vaccinated.

Bhattacharya, a health care expert who writes on epidemiology, cites an Italian study that shows that the natural vaccine effect shields people from re-infection for another year in 99.7% of infections. In the 0.3% of people who are re-infected, the infection is nearly always milder, he said.

The Stanford professor is one of the scientist signers of the Great Barrington Declaration, which urged a more focused approach to covid abatement measures. The scientists declared, "As immunity builds in the population, the risk of infection to all – including the vulnerable – falls. We know that all populations will eventually reach herd immunity – i.e. the point at which the rate of new infections is stable – and that this can be assisted by (but is not dependent upon) a vaccine. Our goal should therefore be to minimize mortality and social harm until we reach herd immunity."

That is, herd immunity has been achieved against the original Alpha Variant and the later Delta Variant. Now the media are foreseeing trouble from the Omicron Variant -- as if to escape the herd immunity blockade -- though the World Health Organization has very skimpy data on Omicron infections, cases, hospitalizations or deaths. That is, a "doom and gloom" forecast is being whipped up based on no data.

A more rational approach, then and now, is "focused intervention," meaning do all that is possible to urge the immune-weakened to be vaccinated -- if the vaccine is sufficiently effective -- and to strongly suggest that they stay clear of crowds. Of course, such advice is a good idea in general, as it curbs the risk of dying from other contagious viruses that likewise have little impact on the healthy.

Joe Biden's declaration of more covid restrictions runs counter to the available data. If he has access to secret data, he should share that information with America, which must endure his dictatorial rules.
