Sherwood. Sure good

Katie Petersen gives us a very nice tease from her new solo album, I Wrote You a Song. Sherwood is an original number for that album.

With Sherwood, this very talented young singer leans heavily into the Pop area, while still retaining a strong flavor of Traditional Country -- which makes sense, as the album was produced in Nashville. The theme is a girl in love, styled with a classic Nashville hook.

But it's Katie's personality and voice that make this a fine piece. Tho she is an expert arranger and skilled composer, it's her personal qualities that make her singing so transformative. Katie is also a terrific fiddler, tho on this cut she seems to be backed up by studio instrumentalists.

This Katie video slid onto Youtube with no fanfare no doubt because of a record industry deal whereby Youtube airs new stuff under the Topic rubric. But there is no avoiding fanfare when it comes to the doings of Katie and her interesting Bluegrass band, the Petersens.

Still, this isn't Bluegrass, nor is it from a Petersens album. It is part of the initial solo flight of a young artist, following on the heels of Katie's younger sister Julianne, who just released a solo album, Beatrice.

Katie's single is available on Apple, Amazon Music, Spotify and other platforms.

The distributor, Distrokid, provided the audio track and image to Youtube, which auto-generated a video.

Here are some data:

Katie's smooth kiss

The Petersens, the internationally known family Bluegrass band, serves up a very fine rendition of the alt rock classic Kiss Me.

It’s both fun and stimulating to observe how the Ozarks group transforms the hit by Sixpence None the Richer into its distinctive string band form. This is something the Petersens do exceptionally well: Rearrange and grass up old Rock, Pop and Country hits (not that they don’t do traditional Grass and Gospel Bluegrass awfully nicely).

Katie is in peak form here, and she even gives us a little bit of whimsical fiddle art as a bonus during the credits roll.

Vent that female rage

Today the spotlight is on female angst and rage songs. I can't say that I've included every major recording in this category. Just a representative few. My personal favorites are You Oughta Know by Alanis Morrissette followed by Julianne Petersen's May Baby. Billie Eilish also ranks high.

Here are some sites giving other views on the female angst short list.

Have you heard of the Petersens?

In a bow to the vagaries of internet search algorithms, News of the World is now re-publishing some posts on The Petersens, a youthful Bluegrass band with a large global following, that first appeared on the GRIST News Features and Bluegrass Review, a Substack newsletter.

The Petersens: Country Roads

The Petersens: Jolene

The Petersens: Carolina in My Mind

But then we have "Bohemian Rhapsody," a song by rocker Freddy Mercury.

But if you like old standbys, their "Rocky Top" is one of the best out there.

And you'll even find old folk music numbers, like "Shenandoah."

Nor is there a shortage of standard Country fare. "Amarillo by Morning" is just one of many examples.

Then there is "Tulsa Time," which has served both Country and Rock artists. Here is their fun grassed-up version.

The troubadors do not hide their faith, as we hear on one of their gospel videos.
