P. Denise Long is an articulate, thoughtful advocate for the often-unfulfilled rights of descendants of slaves. She pans slavish devotion to the Democratic Party and urges that black Americans not rely on that party as their default choice. But more must be done to improve black-white dialog if Republicans are to succeed in drawing blacks into their fold. She agrees that, on a number of social issues, blacks are conservative, being on the same wavelength as white social conservatives who are the bedrock of the GOP.
