Putin's war may end in a dry gulch

Russia's military support activities on the Crimean peninsula -- and hence its entire Ukraine campaign -- face a drastic reversal unless Vladimir Putin's forces can hold the southeastern bank of the Dnipro River.

That is why Russians have dug in their crack troops along the river in Kherson Oblast (province). They must stop the Ukrainians from taking that ground -- otherwise Crimea loses access to the 86% of its water that is taken from the Dnipro via the North Crimean Canal.

After Putin's stooges seized Crimea in 2014, Ukraine cut the canal flow to a trickle with a sandbag-type dam and another concrete dam not far from the river. After Russian forces took Kherson earlier this year, Russia blew up the dams and resumed the supply of water. Enthusiasm among ethnic Russians in Crimea for Putin had waned as agriculture and tourism were greatly hampered by the water crisis.

With Putin's invasion of Ukraine in February came major naval and land force buildups in Crimea. Though potable water might be shipped by rail tanker across the Kerch Strait bridge, it was very unlikely to have sufficed for the large increase in manpower. Also, every tanker shipping water was not shipping fuel. Much of Russia's logistics efforts remain hinged on the Kerch bridge linking Russia and Crimea, even after the bridge was damaged by a truck bomb in October.

Any sudden cutoff in water to Crimea is liable to have a dire effect on the continuation of larger scale forces there. The salt water of the Black and Azov seas can be desalinated -- theoretically. But it takes time to get large systems up to speed -- if Russia even has the parts necessary for such projects.

Hence, despite all the complaints of the hawks about the fall of Kherson City, professional commanders understand that an enormous effort must be put into holding the other side of the Dnipro, or suffer far more catastrophic setbacks.

Yet, though Russia's crack airborne and special forces units are said to be well-entrenched, that doesn't necessarily mean the Ukrainians will find them unduly hard to dislodge. Perhaps that's how it will go. But on the other hand we have seen repeatedly how the Ukrainian forces adapt new tactics to the battlefield, often deploying NATO arms in initially surprising ways. The Ukrainians also show expert generalship and have used real guile to win major victories.

Hawks rip Putin on Kherson pullout

They can't abide military necessity
and see political weakness by Vlad

From the Institute for the Study of War:
Russia’s withdrawal from Kherson City is igniting an ideological fracture between pro-war figures and Russian President Vladimir Putin, eroding confidence in Putin’s commitment and ability to deliver his war promises.

A pro-war Russian ideologist, Alexander Dugin, openly criticized Putin—whom he referred to as the autocrat—for failing to uphold Russian ideology by surrendering Kherson City Nov. 12. Dugin said this Russian ideology defines Russia’s responsibility to defend [the recently annexed] “Russian cities” such as Kherson, Belgorod, Kursk, Donetsk, and Simferopol.

Dugin noted that an autocrat has a responsibility to save his nation all by himself or face the fate of “king of the rains,” a reference to Sir James Frazer’s The Golden Bough in which a king was killed because he was unable to deliver rain amidst a drought.

Dugin also downplayed the role of Putin’s advisors in failing to protect the Russian world and noted that the commander of Russian Forces in Ukraine, Army General Sergey Surovikin was not responsible for the political decision to withdraw from Kherson City.

Dugin noted that the autocrat cannot repair this deviation from ideology merely with public appearances, noting that “the authorities in Russia cannot surrender anything else” and that “the limit has been reached.” He also accused the presidential administration of upholding a “fake” ideology because of its fear of committing to the “Russian Idea.”

Dugin also made a reference to the use of tactical nuclear weapons, which he vaguely stated was “the end” and proceeded to note that overdue Russian changes to the military campaign have not generated any effect to change the course of the war. He also suggested, however, that Russia must commit to the Russian Idea rather than pursuing the “stupid” use of nuclear weapons.

Putin is having a harder time appeasing parts of the highly ideological pro-war constituency due to his military’s inability to deliver his maximalist goals of overthrowing the Ukrainian government and seizing all of Ukraine, as ISW has previously assessed. Putin’s nationalist-leaning propagandists such as Vladimir Solovyov are increasingly demanding that the Kremlin and higher military command to fully commit to their goals in Ukraine, and Solovyov even called for full mobilization and the firing of incompetent officials following the Russian surrender of Kherson City.

Select milbloggers have previously criticized Putin for his [supposed] failure to respond to the attack on the Kerch Strait Bridge on Oct. 9, while others noted that Putin has failed to uphold the ideology of Russian superiority since 2014.

Direct criticism of Putin within the pro-war community is almost unprecedented, and Dugin’s high-profile and unhinged attack on Putin may indicate a shift among the Russian nationalist ideologues.

Putin needs to retain the support of this community and has likely ordered some of his propagandists to suppress any critiques of the Russian withdrawal from Kherson City, since many state TV news programs have been omitting or downplaying the aftermath of withdrawal. The ever-increasing doubts among extreme Russian nationalists about Putin’s commitment to Russian ideology reduce Putin’s appeal to the nationalist community, while mobilization and high casualties will likely continue to upset members of the Russian society.

Wagner-affiliated channels [Wagner is a private mercenary group that had been allied with Putin] are also turning on the Kremlin following the loss of Kherson Oblast, which may further elevate the influence of the siloviki faction. Some milbloggers implied that the Kremlin has betrayed Kherson City by “selling out,” while others noted that the Kremlin has consistently surrendered its territories without asking the Russian people.

Other milbloggers further questioned the legitimacy of the claimed 87% support rate for Russian annexation of Kherson Oblast.

Wagner Group financier Yevheny Prigozhin and some milbloggers have previously discussed the possibility of “Russia’s civil society” stepping up to defend Russia. The growing criticism of the decision to withdraw from western Kherson contrasts with the general support for the decision among the milblogger community before today.

Kremlin says Zelensky is now seizing Russian soil

Putin's legal ploy means Russian conscripts can be sent to Ukraine

As Kherson falls, the annexations look silly
but are used to rationalize Putin's shading of Russian law

Ukraine forces entered Kherson after Russia abandoned the only regional capital it has captured since its invasion began in February. The withdrawal of 30,000 troops was Moscow’s third major retreat of the Ukraine war.

The Kremlin said the withdrawal will not change the status of the region, which Moscow has proclaimed part of Russia.

Flash: KHERSON FALLS

In a major humiliation for Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, Ukraine forces moved into the southern city of Kherson Friday, after Russian troops completed their pullout from the regional capital. According to the Wall Street Journal,
Cheering Ukrainians welcomed the arriving troops and raised their national flag in a public square in the center of Kherson, the only regional capital that Russia had seized since February, according to videos posted online by Ukrainian officials. A crowd of jubilant residents hoisted Ukrainian soldiers on their shoulders. Residents also raised a European Union flag, a sign of many Ukrainians’ longstanding aspirations to forge closer ties with the bloc.

“Glory to heroes. Death to enemies. Ukraine above all!” shouted the crowd.

St Pete tells Yev to take a hike
as Ukraine conflict support dives

A major Russian political brawl is erupting over the Ukraine "special military operation" as disgusted Petersburg officials bar Vladimir Putin's erstwhile(?) ally, Wagner Group tycoon Yevgeniy Prigozhin, from further maneuvers that are stirring up rather than calming down the conflict down south.

From the Institute for the Study of War:
Wagner Group financier Yevgeniy Prigozhin is increasingly wrestling with St. Petersburg officials over expanding Wagner Group operations in the city. Prigozhin’s press service stated that St. Petersburg officials refused to provide a permit for the newly opened Wagner Center in St. Petersburg on a technicality.

The press service noted that St. Petersburg officials are deliberately refusing to issue the permit based on their "ideological” differences, given that Wagner received the permission to construct the center in July.

The press service added that Wagner had petitioned the court and will take the issue further if the court recognizes St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov and his government have committed any “crimes.”

Prigozhin also accused Beglov and other St. Petersburg “liberal” businessmen of financially supporting Ukrainian “nationalists” and betraying Russia in response to the situation. Prigozhin has previously accused Beglov of failing to support the Russian war effort and demanded his resignation, likely as a result of resistance from Beglov on expanding Wagner’s presence in St. Petersburg.

ISW also reported that a Russian nationalist outlet Pravda.Ru, which consistently reports on Prigozhin-related news, published a defamatory piece on Beglov’s uninterest in creating volunteer battalions in August.

Prigozhin is increasingly weaponizing his role in the Russian invasion of Ukraine to push his business aspirations.
Prigozhin is known as a brash militarist who thinks his big talk is justified by his purported prowess in owning a mercenary organization which has only been used for small-scale operations. Yet somehow he thinks of himself as a great field marshal to whom even Vlad Putin must defer. No wonder St. Petersburg officials are fed up with him. It's their boys (and a few girls) being fed into the stupid meatgrinder down south.

Rotten deal for draftees
A group of imprisoned men in Zaitseve, Luhansk Oblast [province], told [media persons] that they were sent to the frontlines around Oct. 20 after very little training, whereupon their officers abandoned them without communications or logistics capabilities for eight days. The men walked about 60 kilometers [about 40 miles] to Starobilsk, where their relatives rented a bus to bring them home.

Russian forces detained the men at the border and imprisoned them in a Zaitseve basement instead.

Relatives of forcibly mobilized Russian men in Vologda Oblast shared a video on Nov. 10 demanding that their mobilized family members be returned from Svatove, Luhansk Oblast due to poor training and leadership on the front.
Other Russian refuseniks have been put in hellish basements, where they are beaten, starved and deprived until they agree to go into battle, where they face vastly better led and equipped Ukrainian forces, which often make short work of Putin's broken regiments.
